Upcoming Road-STEAMer workshop in the CEEGS 2024 conference in Greece: Video games in STEAM and as STEAM – learning and innovating through play

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education involves interdisciplinary approaches to learning in these fields, emphasizing creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving by combining technical and scientific knowledge with artistic and creative processes. Its goal is to prepare students for the complexities of the modern world by fostering innovation, collaboration, and the ability to apply diverse skills to real-world challenges.

At the same time, game design is a creative process that allows us to dissect the complex world of STEAM and appreciate the often-overlooked role of the arts. Art is not just a complementary field that enhances science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, but a creative and expressive way of thinking and doing. This workshop will explore how game design can deepen our understanding of STEAM.

We invite educators, researchers, game designers, and creative professionals to participate in a three-hour workshop titled “Video Games in STEAM and as STEAM: Learning and Innovating Through Play.” This workshop presents a playful opportunity to explore how the principles of STEAM can be integrated with innovative game design to create engaging and educational experiences. Additionally, we will examine how video games inherently incorporate STEAM logic and the lessons they offer.

The workshop will cover a range of topics related to Steam education and game design, including:

  • Video game design as an interdisciplinary creative process
  • Using mainstream video games in STEAM education
  • Designing game-based learning tools that incorporate artistic approaches and creative thinking to enhance STEM education
  • Serious games as means to promote STEM education

 

Call for Papers/Works:

We invite submissions of papers or works related to the workshop topics in the form of a 300-word extended abstract. Accepted submissions will have the opportunity to be presented during dedicated sessions within the workshop.

Abstract deadline: 19.09.2024

Notification of acceptance: 23.09.2024

Workshop Program:

  • Introduction: A brief overview of the workshop objectives and a presentation of the Road-STEAMer EU program.
  • Flash Round: Short presentations from participants featuring accepted contributions.
  • Co-Creation Exercise: This collaborative session focuses on the intersection of video games and STEAM, including designing new tools and promoting innovative ideas.
  • Discussion: Final reflections and notes.

The conference and workshop will be held in Naflplio, Greece, on 10-12 of October 2024. It is organised by Kostas Karpouzis, Elina Roinioti, Iro Voulgari of Panteion University as part of the Road-STEAMer EU program. CEEGS 2024 conference

Central and Eastern European Game Studies conference is a gathering of game scholars organised annually by DiGRA Central and Eastern Europe, but its thematic scope is not limited to regional topics, and it welcomes participants from anywhere in the world. The 2024 conference will be hosted by the Department of Performing and Digital Arts, University of the Peloponnese, Greece.
